Climate Change - Prep

Prepare for Climate Change During Your Next Relocation

The world is changing, and so is the climate. From wildfires to hurricanes and floods, more and more people are experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. As a remote worker, you may be considering a move to an area less prone to such events. Whether you're just starting your research or have already zeroed in on a destination, there are several things to consider before making an environmentally-friendly move. Today, ProspectorWorks will share some tips for remote workers considering a climate change-related move.

Research Apartments For Rent In Areas You're Interested In

The first step is to research areas free from climate change-related events. Once you've concluded where you want to move, start researching rental homes. Take into account things such as how far it is from local hospitals and stores, and the price of utilities. You should also consider the distance to your workplace and the quality of your internet connection.

Compare Costs of Living

Another important factor to consider is the cost of living in the area you've chosen. Some areas may seem less expensive, but the cost of living may be substantially higher. Make a list of all the costs associated with living in the area you've chosen, and compare them with the other areas. This will help you make a well-informed decision while considering your budget.

Connect With the Community

You should also consider the community when choosing a new place to live. You want to move to an area where you can feel at home, and one way to do this is to connect with local people. Joining a community group or taking up a hobby will help you meet new people and get to know your new surroundings. Community groups also provide an opportunity to contribute towards different environmental issues in the area; you may learn a great deal about eco-friendliness, which will make the area even more enjoyable.

Use Environmentally-Friendly Products

Particularly when we’re cleaning, we often use harsh products that are dangerous for the environment – not to mention us! Look into natural cleaning options that are safer but just as effective as Lysol. That way, you can enjoy the benefits of a clean home without any added worry or negative health consequences.

Look For Environmentally-related Volunteer Opportunities

By volunteering, you can promote the environment and help to mitigate the effects of climate change in the area you’ve moved into. You can contact local environmental agencies or organizations, check online forums, or inquire at your community center to find out which areas need your assistance. Volunteering also provides a chance to learn more about your new community, acquire new skills and meet new people.

Monitor Weather Forecasts

Even if you've chosen a part of the world that's known for having mild weather conditions, it's important to familiarize yourself with the area's expected weather patterns. Knowing what conditions to expect can be integral in preparing properly in the event of a sudden shift in conditions or an extreme weather episode. Your vigilance will ensure that you are not unexpectedly caught off guard if nature throws your area a curveball.

Look for Homes with Energy-Efficient Features

When you're house hunting, consider energy-efficient homes with features such as solar panels, double-paned windows and insulation. These properties are a smart investment in the long run as electricity bills will be significantly lower over time. Moreover, it will also reduce your carbon footprint and fight climate change.

Research Local Environmental Laws

When you move to a new area, it's essential to learn about the local environmental laws. Different communities have different environmental guidelines when it comes to waste disposal and recycling, using pesticides and hazardous chemicals, and water conservation. Studying the environmental laws and regulations in your new community not only safeguards the environment from harm but living in compliance also has a positive impact on your surroundings.

These are just a few ways to make your move environmentally-friendly. By doing simple things such as researching, connecting with the community, volunteering, and monitoring weather forecasts, you can find an area unaffected by climate change-related events. When you move, you also have the power to choose sustainable housing and abide by local environmental laws. By making small adjustments, you can have a big impact and continue working towards a more eco-friendly environment.
